Almost-anywhere theories: Reductionism and universality of emergence
نویسنده
چکیده
Here, we aim to show that reductionism and emergence play a complementary role in understanding natural processes and in the dynamics of science explanation. In particular, we will show that the renormalization group—one of the most refined tools of Theoretical Physics—allows to understand the importance of emergent processes’ role in Nature identifying them as universal organization processes, that is, they are scale independent. We can use the syntaxes of Quantum Field Theory and the processes of Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking as a trans-disciplinary theoretical scenario for many other forms of complexity, especially the biological and cognitive ones. 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Reductionism, Emergence, and Effective Field Theories
In recent years, a “change in attitude” in particle physics has led to our understanding current quantum field theories as effective field theories (EFTs). The present paper is concerned with the significance of this EFT approach, especially from the viewpoint of the debate on reductionism in science. In particular, it is a purpose of this paper to clarify how EFTs may provide an interesting ca...
متن کاملAspects of reductionism in religious studies
Reductionism is a major methodological mistake in research and generally in thought; because it can pose as an obstacle to comprehensive views about the researched issue. This issue is more tangible in religious phenomena - due to the multidimensional entity of this subject – and can be more destructive. A researcher through focusing on one role and aspect of religion and concentrating on a ...
متن کاملColocalization of Lichen Planus and Vitiligo: Challenging the Universality of Current Theories
Vitiligo and Lichen Planus, two common dermatologic disorders, are expected to coexist. This leads to diverse theories regarding their immunopathogenesis linkage. In this case, we report a twenty-year-old man suffering from simultaneous lichen planus and vitiligo which were both generalized at the time of observation and also concomitant throughout their entire course of progression. Lichen Pla...
متن کاملEmergence in Psychology
Theories of emergence have had a longstanding influence on psychological thought. Emergentism rejects both reductionism and holism; emergentists are scientific materialists, and yet argue that reductionist explanation may not always be scientifically feasible. I begin by summarizing the history of emergence in psychology and sociology, from the mid-19th century through the mid-20th century. I t...
متن کاملEmergentism, Irreducibility, and Downward Causation
Several theories of emergence will be distinguished. In particular, these are synchronic, diachronic, and weak versions of emergence. While the weaker theories are compatible with property reductionism, synchronic emergentism and strong versions of diachronic emergentism are not. Synchronic emergentism is of particular interest for the discussion of downward causation. For such a theory, a syst...
